1.     President's Note:

Salam Alaikum everyone!

Hope everyone had a nice, safe break and emerged from the spring festivities with their deen intact. If you're like me, you're probably dying to meet your old MSA pals after these past couple weeks. Worry not, friend, the old staple of MSA events will resume this week. I'm referring of course to our Wednesday night Halal Dinners in Commons,  Wednesday night discussions, Friday Jumuah prayer, and daily salat prayers. These activities will be a great chance to catch up and we look forward to seeing you there.

It's also my great pleasure to inform everyone that the new MSA T-Shirts have been ordered and they're on their way. In only a couple weeks, you'll be styling with a new blue tee and be the envy of your entryway. And one last thing: during break, we sent out a brief survey asking for your input on several initiatives that the MSA is pursuing. If you haven't already done so, please take a few minutes to complete this brief survey and ensure that your voice is heard!

Peace,

-Usama Qadri

2.     Islamic Awareness Week:

What do the editor-in-chief of Azizah Magazine, and the host of the Riz Khan Show all have in common? You guessed it! They're both presenters at the 2008 Islamic Awareness Week at Yale. Get ready to show your support during the week of April 7th in order to welcome several renowned scholars, civic and social leaders, and to have a little fun participating in a calligraphy class and modeling in a fashion show.

For more information, or if you would like to help plan events taking place during IAW, please contact Nisreen Hasib at nisreen.hasib@yale.edu.

3.     Critical Islamic Reflections:

The 7th Annual Critical Islamic Reflections Conference is just a few weeks away! Register online for the conference at www.yale.edu/cir. Hope to see you there!

4.     Halaqas:

Join us every  Wednesday Night  after Isha in the Musulla as we explore the meaning of the Quran and watch and discuss lectures on contemporary issues. Have an idea for a discussion topic? Shoot an email to usama.qadri@yale.edu.

5.     Halal Dinners:

Have nothing to do for Wednesday dinners? Have something to do but want to get out of it? Want to hang out with fellow MSA students in a very low-key, high-chill environment? If so, then come join us for a delicious HALAL dinner, every Wednesday at 6 PM in the Commons Dining Hall. All are welcome! Just bring a fork and plate (kidding -- these are supplied there). A Grad student? No problem. Contact Sameer Ahmed (sameer.ahmed@yale.edu) for vouchers. Food!

6.     Sisters' Tajweed Class:

Attention sisters! There will be weekly Tajweed (recitation of the Qur'an) classes in the Musalla every Tuesday at 6:30 PM and Wednesday at 4:00 PM. Sister Isra Bhatty has been generous enough to offer these weekly classes, so please come, regardless of your reading/recitation level. Please email isra.bhatty@yale.edu if you plan on coming!

7.     Adopt-An-Orphan :

As our Adopt-An-Orphan Drive continues into its 6th week, we reach ever closer to our goal, Alhamdulillah. In this past week before spring break, we managed to gather a respectable $30, bringing us to a grand total of $298. That means, only $171 keeps us from sponsoring an orphan for a full year. The goal is within our sights, let's keep it up!

If you are interested in donating to this worthy cause and can't make it to Jumuah, please leave your donation in the collection box in the Musulla. If that doesn't work, feel free to relay you donation to any of the board members, Homayra, or Sister Shamshad. Thank you.

8.    MSA Casual Events:

Every Friday from 6-8 PM , join the MSA for basketball at the Payne Whitney Gym! All people, especially girls, are welcome to continue the MSA's winning streak of 26-1.  (Way to royally screw up that dunk, Harib)

Every Friday , after Isha (8:30), MSA will be having casual events (from ice cream breaks at Coldstone to a quick bite at Aladdin [Umar highly recommends their number 68- that is the philly steak for anyone interested] to movie nights ). So whoever wants to be added to the Casual List to receive updates about these events, share a link with the community, or receive updates about informal get-togethers and activities, send an email to zenah.hasan@yale.edu .

9.     Ilfmest:

Ilmfest is just around the corner! The AlMaghrib Institute brings seven great presenters speaking about enlightening studies of our legacy, identity, relations with non-muslims, and much more! For more information, visit http://www.almaghrib.org/ilmfest/.

10.     MSA National East Zone Conference:

Join hundreds of Muslim Students for the annual MSA National East Zone USA Conference!! It will take place April 4-6 at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ. Register online at http://ezusa.msanational.org /conference/registration. The registration fee is $60 or $95 with a hotel room.
