Master's Tea with Jack El-Hai Tuesday, November 15th 4:00pm Morse College Master's House
Mind Matters and Morse College will sponsor this tea with Jack El-Hai, author of The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness , a biography of Dr. Walter Freeman, best known for being responsible for the widespread adoption of lobotomy in America after WWII. El-Hai currently serves as executive vice president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

Master's Tea with Peter Kramer Tuesday, November 29th 4:00pm Morse College Master's House
Mind Matters and Morse College will sponsor this tea with psychiatrist Peter Kramer, author of the landmark book Listening to Prozac, a fascinating look at the new generation of antidepressants, which discusses how these drugs can make a mildly-depressed person feel "better than well".

Master's Tea with Jennifer Traig Tuesday, November 1st 4:00pm Morse College Master's House
Mind Matters and Morse College will sponsor this tea with Jennifer Traig, author of Devil in the Details: Scenes from an Obsessive Girlhood about her experience growing up with obsessive compulsive disorder, including a "hyper-religious" form of OCD called scrupulosity.

Fellowship Place: UN Night Monday, October 24
Mind Matters members hosted an evening program at Fellowship Place focusing on world culture in celebration of United Nations Day. Members presented on the role of the World Health Organization in international mental health affairs, provided snacks from around the world, wrote Fellowship Place members' names in Japanese and Hebrew, and led a pictionary game using famous places. A good time was had by all.

Active Minds Conference October 14-15, Duke University
Lekshmi Santhosh, Nick Abreu, and Rachel Denison represented Yale Mind Matters at the annual Mental Health on Campus Conference, sponsored by Active Minds. Sixty students from eighteen colleges and universities in thirteen different states were in attendance. Lekshmi and Nick were invited to present on Mind Matters's successful National Mental Health Awareness Week 2004. Rachel gave a workshop on website development basics. In addition, the members attended a variety of workshops and speaker sessions to bring new awareness, education, and advocacy ideas back to Yale.

Are We Overmedicated? Depression and its Treatment: A Panel Discussion Tuesday, April 19th 8:00pm LC 101 Poster
Our panelists bring a wide range of experience and expertise to this discussion of depression today and the controversy surrounding the use of antidepressants. Anonymous Q&A following the discussion. Featuring:

Master's Tea with Robert Whitaker Tuesday, April 19th 4:00pm Morse College Master's House
Mind Matters and Morse College will sponsor this tea with Robert Whitaker, author of Mad in America: Bad Science, Bad Medicine, and the Enduring Mistreatment of the Mentally Ill. Whitaker has won the George Polk Award for Medical Writing and a National Association of Science Writers' Award for best magazine article. He was a finalist for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, considered journalism's top prize.

A national speaker from the non-profit Find Your Voice. Sponsored by ECHO, the student-run eating disorders hotline.

Mind Matters O.C. Night March 24, 2005 7:00pm
Mind Matters sponsored a screening of an episode from Fox's "The O.C." We watched the episode with Yale Psychology Professors Frank Keil and Kristi Lockhart and discussed mental health-related issues raised in the episode.

Meditation and Yoga:
Two Free Introductory Workshops

Meditation Workshop: Drink tea, read from the Dharma, and learn the basics of meditation from an experienced instructor. Thursday, February 10th, at 7pm in the Trumbull basement, entryway E.
Yoga Workshop: An introduction to the fundamentals from the same experienced instructor. Something nice to eat or drink, as well. Thursday, February 17th, at 7pm in the Trumbull basement, entryway E.
No experience necessary! Meditation pillows provided. Come spend a fun evening learning great ways to relax and reduce stress. Attend either or both sessions. Bring friends!

Fellowship Place Arts Night Monday, February 21, 2005 - 5:30pm
Mind Matters will go to Fellowship Place to present our donation of $1,000 and to spend some time with the members making picture frames. Fellowship Place will provide dinner, Mind Matters will provide dessert. Should be a good time all around, and an especially rewarding experience if you have never been to Fellowship Place before. Mind Matters visited Fellowship Place, a New Haven community center for adults with mental illness, with pies and ice cream for a Thanksgiving dessert.



National Mental Illness Awareness Week October 3-9, 2004
Mind Matters sponsored a week of activities to raise awareness about mental health issues on campus to mark this nationally designated week.

We tabled on Cross Campus all week, Monday-Friday from 10am-2pm. At our table, we distributed FREE Yale mental health resources magnets, silver campaign for the brain ribbons, and plenty of mental health and Mind Matters information.

Plus, the Mind Matters Testimonial Board was on display, featuring prose, poetry, and art by Yale students expressing their feelings and ideas about their own experiences with mental illness. The board also featured artwork by adults with mental illness, provided by Fellowship Place.

The Yale Spizzwinks(?) a capella groups gave a benefit concert for Fellowship Place, a New Haven mental illness community and recovery center.

Jack Nicholson stars in this classic, 5-Oscar-winning film set in a mental hospital. A short discussion will followed the film.

Our diverse, six-member panel shared their insights on eating disorders in an extremely interesting discussion. Anonymous Q&A followed.

Movie Night April 28, 2004 7:30pm
We watched the award-winning movie A Beautiful Mind, ate ice cream sundaes galore, and talked about the movie's strengths and inaccuracies in its portrayal of schizophrenia.



Active Minds Conference March 27-28, 2004
