  • Issue IV (Spring 2006) - Those Who Do Without It - Examining the Problem of America's Ununisured
    • Featuring: and Interview with Gail Wilensky, Former Director of Medicare and Medicaid

We live in a country fraught with problems, all of which struggle for precedence in our attention. Issues like foreign policy and education have all taken center stage at one time or another. Yet perhaps the gravest issue facing America is the crisis in our healthcare system. No country can function without a good system, and ours is in serious need of renovation. It is this crisis that future physicians and lawyers need to know about in order to enact changes before our healthcare system falls apart entirely.

Americans have witnessed the birth of successful programs such as Medicare and Medicaid as well as the evolution of a unique employer-based managed care system. But despite the positive effects conferred by the changes in the last 40 years, over 15% of Americans lack insurance, and our healthcare costs are double that of nearly every other country. Doctors are frequently leaving the medical profession, citing malpractice concerns or the infringement of managed care into their practices. In 2000, the World Health Organization ranked America number 37 among nations in providing quality health care.

The Yale Journal of Medicine and Law seeks to address the problems in the American healthcare system through informing Yale students about the impact of legislation on the field of medicine. We hope that we can inspire Yale students to become passionate about changing the American healthcare system for the better.
