September:
i. Time to renovate the lawn. A light fertilizer application (1/2 pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet) would be recommended now, as this is the time of year that cool season grass plants put a lot of energy into root growth. Good roots mean nice plants next year, better drought tolerance and thicker lawns. Thicker lawns mean fewer weeds. So plant a good grass seed, preferably a mix of turf-type tall fescue, bluegrass and perennial rye. This will ensure that one pest or pathogen will not obliterate the entire lawn.
ii. Order the bulbs. Your bulb order should be in soon. Bulbs don’t ship until October usually, but the rarer varieties get sold out to the earliest orders, so best to get this done now. September is not too soon to plant some of the minor bulbs.
iii. Discontinue fertilizing roses: they need to harden off for winter, so they don’t need a flush of bloom that results from fertilization. Remove rose petals leaving the flower head on the plant: this helps the plant to harden off as well. The petals can be dried for potpourri.
