FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
Graduate Student South Asian Studies Program Travel Grant
Provides travel support for Yale University Graduate Students to attend and/or participate in South Asian Studies workshops, conferences and meetings on topics in South Asian history, politics, economics, languages and culture in the United States and internationally throughout the academic year as well as during the summer. Applications are invited from all disciplines in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and professional schools. Please apply at least 6-8 weeks before the dates of the meetings to be attended so that awards if made can be announced a month before travel is undertaken. Funds are administered by the South Asian Studies Council at the MacMillan Center. Awards, generally range from $1,000 to $1,500 and can be applied to travel and room and board. Priority will be given to students with demonstrated academic commitment to South Asia. Awardees are expected to submit a one-page report on their activity by the end of the semester in which the award was utilized. Contact barbara.papacoda@yale.edu for application information.

Sir Ratan Tata Fellowship 2009/10
The Sir Ratan Tata Foundation at the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) invites applications for the Sir Ratan Tata Fellowship now in its thirteenth year. Applicants should be established scholars in the social sciences with experience of research on South Asia. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or comparable qualifications and experience - the fellowship is not intended for students registered for a degree or diploma, nor is it intended for senior academics.
1. The Sir Ratan Tata Fellowship will be for a period of up to eight months, preferably starting 1st October 2009, and will be based at the Asia Research Centre at the LSE.
2. The Fellow will receive a monthly subsistence allowance of up to £1,500 a month, the exact amount depending on qualifications; and will be provided with office space and access to research facilities at the School.
3. The Fellow will be expected to engage in research on a topic under the following themes:
- Poverty, Inequality, Human Development and Social Exclusion
- Quality of Public Life
- Regional Disparities
- Identities – Gender, Ethnicity, Language
- Economy and Environment
Preference will be given to topics that focus on contemporary social and economic concerns of South Asia.
4. The Fellowship is open to candidates from South Asia, that is, the SAARC region which includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
5. The Fellow will be expected to finish a piece of research of publishable quality during their stay and make a presentation at a seminar or lecture arranged by the Asia Research Centre.
6. Applications should be addressed to The Chairman of the Management Committee, The Asia Research Centre, London School of Economics & Political Science, Houghton Street, London WC2A 2AE, UK, and may be mailed through the post or emailed to arc@lse.ac.uk. Applications will not be accepted via fax under any circumstances. Applications should include a curriculum vitae in no more than three pages and an outline of proposed research in no more than three pages. Please use A4-sized plain paper only. Please do not staple your application. Applicants should also give the names and addresses of two referees, familiar with their work, to be contacted by the Chairman.
The final date for receipt of applications is Monday 19 January 2009. Late applications will not be accepted. The successful candidate will be informed of the decision by the end of April 2009.
