IV. Cyprus and the European Union: Additional Resources

Books

Joseph S. Joseph, Cyprus: Ethnic Conflict and International Politics From Independence to the Threshold of European Union New York: 1997

This is the best single work on the political divisions in Cyprus and on the efforts of Cyprus to become part of the European community. For advanced students.

John McCormick, Understanding the European Union: A Concise Introduction
New York: 2002

This is the most accessible single work on the institutions and the history of the European Union. This is part of a series on the history, function, and structure of the European Union.

John Pinder, The European Union: A Very Short Introduction New York: 2001

A small but incredibly useful introduction to the workings of the European Union. This book is especially helpful on the structure of the EU.

Web Sites

http://www.cyprus-eu.org.cy/eng/brief_history.htm

This is the best source of information of the accession negotiations of Cyprus into the European Union. Position papers of Cyprus, position papers of the EU, documents, negotiation procedures and a history of the process are all available on this site.

http://www.pio.gov.cy

A wealth of information can be found on the site on political developments in Cyprus. There is a massive amount of information on Cyprus and the European Union, including every single document coming out of these negotiations (students doing primary source research should start here). Also, there is a section that includes daily political news coming from and concerning Cyprus( this goes back some ten years); students and teachers can go back and following negotiations and news concerning Cyprus and the EU on a daily basis. This is a "can’t miss" site. General information on Cyprus also available here.

http://europa.eu.int

An incredibly useful site on European Union and European integration. Perhaps the best site available for an overall history of the union; a large number of documents are available here.

http://www.mfa.gov.cy/mfa/mfa.nsf/EUHistoricalOverview?OpenForm

An official site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus. The site also contains invaluable information on Cyprus and the European Union, especially on common foreign and security policies.

http://mondediplo.com/1998/09/07cyprus
An older but very valuable article on Turkish Cypriots and their views of EU membership.
