Exchanging Money in the Dominican Republic

Subject: Math and elementary Spanish at high school or college level.

Duration: 1-2 classes

Goals: To explore the concept of the international exchange rate.

Objectives:
To practice math skills such as multiplication, division, and addition.

To use the internet to calculate the dollar value of the Dominican peso.

Activities:
1. Ask students what they know about different currency used internationally.

2. Students visit the WEB page http://www.oand.com/convert/classic to find the current value of the
Dominican peso.

3. Give each student copies of "Dominican Bills and Coins." Students calculate the value of bills and coins in Dominican pesos and US dollars.

4. In pairs, give students the two sheets: "Dominican Receipts - Blumens," and "Dominican Receipts - Supermercado." Students answer the questions.

Assessment:
Students take quiz "Calculating exchange values."

3 Copies of Dominican Bills and Coins
Copies of Dominican receipts (see above)
