Grade Level: 3rd

Duration: 1 class

Goal: To create and participate in a market.

Objectives: To develop and execute a plan to sell items in a school market place.

Student Activities:
1. The teacher announces that the students are going to create a Caribbean market place. Using slides or a powerpoint presentation, the teacher shows students examples of markets found in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

2. Students work in groups to design the following: a kiosk, a sign for the store, the products they are going to sell and the prices, the brand name, and labels for each item.

3. Along with the products students create, they can also sell the cooked plantains and their Caribbean Cuisine cookbook.

Materials:
Kiosk
Construction paper, scissors, glue
Ingredients depending on the recipe selected
Caribbean Recipe Books
Labels
Plastic utensils for eating
Napkins
Cooking utensils

Assessment:
Photos will demonstrate the students’ ability to create an inviting kiosk. Profit from product (plantains and the cookbook) sales will indicate how successful the Market Plan activity was.
