Global Youth in the Digital Age

Application Deadline is May 15, 2013. Payment must be received by May 22, 2013.

The 2013 Summer Institute “Global Youth in the Digital Age” will focus on how technology is transforming educational practice and opportunity the world over. Using technology that was once unimaginable, youth around the world are engaged in civil society as advocates for their generation, mobilizing to effect change and create economic opportunity. These tools also enable cross cultural exchanges that open the world to a new generation of truly global citizens. The summer institute will explore the promises and pitfalls of these trends, and also provide practical tools for teachers who want to globalize their own classrooms through intercultural exchanges and international communication.

This institute will explore, in depth, how technology and increased connectivity supports youth’s civic dynamism and social engagement as well as their perception of citizenship and responsibility.  We will focus especially on the emerging countries in Africa, Eastern Europe and China.  A major focus will be on the promise technology offers to classrooms worldwide.  Cultural exchanges, increased access to information, interdisciplinary and globalized projects, as well as revolutionary educational technology like Kahn Academy and online education are all transforming our notion of what school should be, as well as how students from around the world can interact and learn.  We will explore these changes and how classrooms are “morphing” to educate 21st century students.

World class scholars, including Yale faculty and graduate students, will reveal how current events in these regions are re-shaping the civic and political landscape along with demands on educators.  Educational experts from innovative schools will share field experience and lessons, and participants will explore the involvement of specific New England institutions in these processes with a regional field trip.  Computer lab time will be available for participants to experiment with classroom technology.  A Teacher Advisor will be an integral part of the program to guide participants to write a curricular unit for their own classroom use or a professional presentation for their peers, either/both of which will be published on our PIER website.
