The Office of Career & Alumni Services (OCAS) at The MacMillan Center is your home base for job and internship information. Career planning is a process so take advantage of all the services the OCAS has to offer at the start of your Masters Program.
Career Counseling
Individualized, personal career guidance is a hallmark of the OCAS. Students are strongly encouraged from the beginning of their academic program to avail themselves of the personalized career assistance that a small program affords. First and second year students can seek advice on international career opportunities, how to effectively market themselves, resume and cover letter preparation, networking, and negotiating job offers. The office is open Monday – Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
Alumni Connections
Close to 10,000 Yale alumni have volunteered to offer students guidance on career related issues through the YALE CAREER NETWORK (YCN), www.aya.yale.edu/ycn. Our alumni are a great resource, and in addition to working directly with you, many offer their time to participate in career events throughout the year.
Workshops
The OCAS offers an ongoing series of small group workshops. These workshops address major facets of career development and planning and allow you to practice your skills in an informal and relaxed setting. For a schedule of workshops check CareerTalk. A sample of workshops to be held this academic year are:
- Resume and Cover Letter Clinic
- The Art of Interviewing
- Job Search Strategies
- Finding Your Niche in the Non-Profit Sector
- Opportunities in the US Federal Government
- How to Plan a Summer Internship
Summer Internship
Summer internships between the first and second years of the Program are an integral part of your professional development while at Yale. Students are required to obtain summer experience that contributes to their academic and professional goals. In addition, internships play an increasingly important role in helping organizations to identify candidates for permanent employment. Many resources are at your disposal to help you in your internship search.
Career Resource Library
A wealth of resource material – guidebooks, industry directories, organization literature, international employment periodicals, and business and international affairs journals, and resume and cover letter guides - are available to assist you in career planning. The library is located on the first floor of Luce Hall. The career books may be checked out for 48 hours; an honor system is in effect. Some student favorites are:
- International Career Employment Weekly
- Resume and Cover Letter Binders
- Careers in International Affairs
- Interaction Member Profiles
- APSIA Guide to International Careers
- APSIA Sector Guides
- Internship Bible
Special Events
Throughout the academic year the OCAS sponsors many different events to help introduce you to opportunities in the international employment market. Some events to look forward to are: Yale Career Fair, International Opportunities Fair, Non-Profit Career Fair, Federal Government Career Day, the Washington, DC Career Trip, NY Career Trip, and the International Development Policy Speakers Series.
CareerTalk
The bulletin of the Office of Career & Alumni Services. Mailed bi-weekly via email, it contains essential information on job opportunities, workshop and event dates, fellowship information and anything else that’s relevant to you and the Masters Program.
Recruitment Activities
Each year the OCAS teams up with the Yale School of Management (SOM) to offer you the opportunity to participate in their recruitment activities. You must apply in order to participate and particular preference is given to students who possess a strong interest in private sector employment, relevant professional experience, and a strong quantitative back ground. Other recruitment activities such as company presentations and resume drops take place at the MacMillan Center and the main Graduate School.
