Coca-Cola CEO Lectures on Empowering Women

Muhtar KentThis year’s Coca-Cola lecture at the MacMillan Center on October 4 was given by the President and CEO of the Coca-Cola Company, Muhtar Kent. His topic was “Who Will Drive the 21st Century Agenda? Women.” Kent laid out his program for reaching that goal, both within his company and in the world. The first goal he said, speaking metaphorically since Coca-Cola operates in 206 countries, is “to accelerate women’s leadership within our own four walls.”

Sir John Major Gives Walker Lecture

Sir John MajorJohn Major, who succeeded fellow Conservative Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and preceded Labor Party PM Tony Blair, gave the George Herbert Walker III lecture at Luce Hall on November 30. He led the government from 1990 to 1997. His talk, entitled “Fantasy to Reality: The World that Lies Ahead,” was sponsored by the MacMillan Center and the Center for the Study of Globalization.

Five Councils Designated National Resource Centers

Five of the area studies councils (Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Middle East) of the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale have been awarded a total of more than $9 million dollars from the U.S. Department of Education based on the grant applications each submitted in March 2010. Each council has been awarded a four-year grant and been designated as a National Resource Center. The funding also includes Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships awarded to the Africa, Europe and Middle East councils.
