The International Studies major is designed to be taken in conjunction with another major at Yale. The breadth of the IS major complements the depth of a disciplinary major. The interdisciplinary nature of the International Studies major requires: Term courses. In addition to fulfilling the requirements of the primary major, a student completing International Studies as a second major must pass eleven term courses, including the senior seminar, and meet the major's language requirement. Up to two courses in the major may be taken on a Credit/D/Fail basis. No more than two term courses may overlap with the first major. Students are expected to choose their courses from the following categories:
Students contemplating applying to the International Studies major should elect courses during their freshman and sophomore years to ensure that they will be able to meet the requirements of two majors in their four years at Yale. The International Studies major has created a planning rubric to assist students in this planning. This does not preclude regular meetings with the DUS. Language requirement. Majors in International Studies must demonstrate advanced ability in one, or competence in two, modern languages other than English. This requirement is met by the completion of two L5 courses in one language, one L4 course in two different languages, or documented equivalent proficiency. Grades in language courses do not count toward Distinction in the Major. Senior requirement. The capstone of the IS major is the two-term senior seminar, in which a group of students and a faculty member study topics connected to a single broad theme and/or a region of the world. It is within this two-term course that students complete their senior essays, which should draw on foreign language as well as English sources.
