The Fox Experience

Michelle Chen to the Fudan University, Shanghai

chenGreetings from Shanghai. Sorry I forgot to check in with you guys.

Things were a bit crazy as I was settling in, especially since I arrived just as the week-long national holiday celebration was starting. So for that reason, I have yet to get my residency permit, but I'll do all that as soon as I have a free day.

Fortunately, I've been very busy with research. Most of my fieldwork has involved hanging out with migrants that I've met in the local area. I have several main interview subjects--a migrant household composed of two couples from Henan, an older migrant from Jiangsu, and two young people from Anhui province who left their hometowns to work. I've also visited a migrant school and met with a couple of professors in Shanghai who are doing research on non-Shanghainese living in Shanghai. I've been rather surprised at how diverse and accessible the migrant population is. There seems to be an abundance of case studies, and lots of people who want to tell their stories. But I have not yet figured out a particular focus for my research, beyond exploring cultural identity and the process of adapting to urban life.
