Several sources of funding are available to students pursuing degrees in African Studies at Yale. Students should consult and apply through the Yale Grants & Fellowships website.
Africa-specific awards include the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) and the Lindsay Fellowship for Research in Africa, but many other awards that can be used in Africa are also available.
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Higher Education Act, Title VI. Fellowships are available to graduate and professional school students whose academic work includes foreign language study and whose career plans include teaching, public service or business related to African Studies, European Studies, Middle East Studies, or Latin American Studies. The eligible languages for each competition are announced on the application. FLAS fellowships are available for the summer and for the academic year. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. are eligible to apply. View past recipients. All Yale applicants must apply through the Yale Student Grants & Fellowships database.
Academic year fellowships are for intermediate or advanced language study at Yale. The Council on African Studies will consider applications for elementary level language study, but priority is given to advanced study. Academic year fellowships support full tuition and provide a stipend. The eligible languages for academic year study are Arabic, Kiswahili, Yoruba and Zulu. Download Application Instructions. Summer fellowships are awarded for intensive language study. Eligible languages are Arabic, Kiswahili, Yoruba and Zulu but additional languages will be considered. Non-Yale students are eligible to apply for summer fellowships. Lindsay Fellowship for Research in Africa
The Lindsay Fellowship for Research in Africa supports grants to graduate and professional students for summer research in order to increase understanding of Africa among Yale students and faculty. Highest priority will be given in the following order: (1) graduate and professional school students; (2) junior faculty. Only those returning to Yale in the semester following the award are eligible to receive an award. One or more fellowships of up to $3,000 will be awarded for summer travel and field work expenses in Africa for relevant research, study projects, internships or conferences (paper presentation at conference required). Fox International Fellowship
The Fox International Fellowship invites Yale University graduate students and graduating seniors to apply for fellowships to conduct independent research during the 2009-2010 academic year at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town. Research topics must be related to economics, political science, international relations, law, business and finance, environmental policy or contemporary history.
The Fellowship includes round trip airfare, a stipend for living expenses, health insurance, and up to $2,000 for research related travel within South Africa . Priority is for a full academic year, although single term awards are possible. Applications from international students proposing research projects in their country of origin are ineligible.
