Where is the mac-address set in Linux?

Hi all,

recently I asked for help with a problem concerning dhcpcd. Meanwhile, I see
that packets originating from the respective machine don't carry the right
HWaddr. ifconfig gives the same faulty value.

I have a pcmcia-network card, I presume the mac-address printed on the card
to be correct. How is the HWaddr in the packets set? Which software is
involved (the kernel, the pcmcia-drivers?)? Where could I probe to track
down the error?

Best wishes,
Rolf
