This may not satisfy you if you're a GNU/Open Source zealot, or don't like
spending money, but the full "Open" Sound System (http://www.opensound.com)
solved all my sound problems. In my experience it works quite well with
every kernel version and distribution (I've used it with Debian and RedHat
extensively). I paid the $20 bucks two years ago and have been downloading
trouble-free upgrades since.

P.S. They have versions prepackaged for the stock RedHat 5.1 and 5.2
kernels. Otherwise, you just compile your kernel with no sound and let OSS
take care of everything during its installation.
