Okay the first thing you should do is goto root and look at
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets
your login and password should be in that file. what are you using to
connect to yale with in linux? I recommend before you even bother with
files and text settings that you boot windows (sad isn't it:) and find a
program called xisp on the internet. This is the best dialer/ppp setup
program I have found. once you get it I'll help you work through it if you
have any problems. There is also a program ezppp which is good as well as
kppp if you have kde installed. You may be using one of these I couldn't
tell if you were. Anyway give me some more details and I'm sure we can get
it to work. One thought: Do you have a "WinModem" it might say it on the
box you got it with, they usually advertise fairly now and say WinModem.
These are bad modems which require windows to emulate certain modem
functions in software. Linux has no way of supporting these and so you are
pretty much stuck. I had this problem but I also had a spare 14.4k modem.
i plugged both modems into the computer and used one or the other
depending on my operating system, with a y cable hooking both modems to
one phone line so I wouldn't have to crawl on the floor and switch the
phone line between the two modems. Anyways, let me know how it goes.
