The answer to your question depends on your window manager/desktop
environment. (I mean, the desktop environment that I use doesn't even have
icons on the desktop or an integrated way of putting them there. :) )

Perhaps someone who has more experience with KDE or GNOME - I'd
assume that you're using one of the two? - might be able to chime in and
offer more specific help.
