I considered buying a laptop from VA Research a couple of years ago and
corresponded with them by email quite a bit. They seemed knowledgeable
and helpful. I ended up not buying from them (too rich for me). After
overcoming my fear (and doing some research), I went the other
direction and bought a used 486 Thinkpad, which continues to serve me
very well. I'm not sure what the benefit of the prepackaged machines is
unless maybe your needs are very high end or weird.
