Hello:
I need some help to install RH 6.0 on my laptop (DELL Latitude
CPx, intel 500 MHz, 256 MB RAM, single IBM 17 GB harddrive) which
currently has Windows NT Server 4.0 SP5 installed on it. Here are the
steps I took but was not ultimately successful:
1. Went into NT Disk Administrator and freed up 4.5 GB of space.
2. Put in Cheapbytes RH cd-rom and booted up.
3. Went into fdisk and created these partitions:
hda1 NTFS 8GB (already present - fdisk shows the NTFS as
HPFS) - primary partition
hda2 NTFS 4.5GB (already present - fdisk shows this as
HPFS) - primary partition
hda3 ext2 250MB (for swap space) - primary partition
hda4 ext2 remaining space as logical partition
hda5 ext2 700MB for /
hda6 ext2 150 for /var
hda7 ext2 1.5GB for /usr/local
hda8 ext2 700MB for /home
hda9 ext2 1GB for /usr
4. When I attempted to verify the partition table, fdisk gave me errors
saying
partition1 overlaps partition2
partition1 overlaps partition3
partition1 overlaps partition5
.
.
.
I could understand that this was just NT acting weirdly but the tail
errors also showed:
partition3 overlaps partition5
partition3 overlaps partition6 and so on for each partition from
top partition to successive partitions.
I fiddled around with this a couple of times by actually giving the
start cylinder number and end cylinder number but it wouldn't go away.
5. I said "what the heck" and I told fdisk to write the partition table
anyway. It did and everything went smoothly. The RPM's got installed.
6. When I came to the boot loader section, I told the installation
wizard that the linux boot/root partition was hda5 (/) since I had read
the Linux-NT-loader mini-HOWTO.
7. Nope, it didn't like it and I went to the Menu part to configure X.
8. So I skipped the bootloader section and X server test worked fine.
9. I also created the custom rescue disk went it told me to.
10. Then I booted again with the CD-rom and put in the custom rescue
disk. It found the image in the rescue disk but it gave me a kernel
panic and halted. I followed the whole she-bang a couple of times and
nope, the custom rescue disk never worked - gave me the same kernel
panic every time.
11. Then I went to the RH website and got the rescue image from there.
And it booted fine with that.
12. I mounted /dev/hda5 as /mnt/test and did (as per the mini-HOWTO)
dd if=/dev/hda5 of=/mnt/test/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
dd if=/mnt/test/bootsect.lnx of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1
13. Took that floppy disk to my desktop (which dual boots Win95 and
RH6.0) and copied it to the Win partition.
14. Booted desktop into Win95 copied that bootsect.lnx and put it in my
laptop at C:\BOOTSECT.LNX
15. Modified the NT OS loader and when I booted the laptop the Linux
option was there.
16. But when I selected the Linux option to boot, I get a blank black
screen with a blinking "_" on the top left hand side and that's it.
So I am stuck. I am guessing it's to do with the fdisk but I have no
idea how to fix it. Any help, comments, suggestions,.... will be greatly
appreciated. I have been tearing my hair out over this.
Thanks,
rinendra
