Lots of programs have "visual bell" options which will cause the screen to
flash instead of causing the computer to beep. Honestly, I can't stand
either: I find the flickering of "visual bell" even more annoying than the
actual beep. Unfortunately, not all programs seem to have the visual bell
option anyway, and not all programs allow you to disable beeping. I
haven't checked the latest Bash, but I hated that every time I hit TAB to
do autocomplete, it would beep if it found more than one match. If they
haven't added the option already, in my copious free time I want to hack
the Bash source to disable beeping.

Anyway, the easiest and most universal option I know of is to unplug or
snip the internal speaker's wire. Yes, the internal speaker is separate
from your sound card. Even if your sound card were malfunctioning or
removed, the infernal machine could still beep at you.
