Gee, I crash AppleShare from Unix, oh, twice a week at minimum.
This is pretty much only Pantheon, which of course isn't even
Netatalk. (I've never been able to compile Netatalk on my computer,
unfortunately) Are you sure it's acutally afpd that's hanging up, not
your Mac? I too have the problem with large files, like when I tried to
transfer about 40 MB of Powerpoint presentations onto Capitoline, but it's
the computer I'm at that dies- I assume other users (if there are any...)
can still reach their home directories just fine. Possibly just some
random issue involved with Unix-Apple sharing- the price we pay for
everything being so easy to use. Can't answer to the ftp question- try it
the hard way and do stuff via Pantheon, just for variety (and both ways-
ftp stuff to Pantheon and then try putting it onto your Linux box from a
telnet session and pulling it off Pantheon from your computer- at least
that'll tell you what's the bottleneck).
