Looking at http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/quicktimeintro/ it does not
occure to me that someone is closed out from doing experiments with
QuicTime.
Addition to that, you even can have the source code to QTSS at
http://www.publicsource.apple.com/projects/streaming/
If that is not enough for a hardened Linux developer, then I would check
out http://www.publicsource.apple.com/
where you can find additional info how to port almost any part of Quicktime
to a Linux variant.
