It may depend on just how old and slow the linux box is.

I never had any troubles with using a PII 300 for a router on a
10-base-T network.

The CS Department used to used a bunch of Suns to do routing on the
old 10-base-2 network. There was some concern that the Suns were not
as fast as a router would be, but I was never convinced of it.

If performance is the only issue, I would be surprised if it is a big
enough issue to matter.
