Some dorms have hubs that provide 'eavesdrop protection' by allowing
traffic destined for only a single hardware address (over any given
interval) to pass through to your port. If you try to connect more than
one computer to a port, incoming traffic for all but one of the hosts (at
any given time) is going to get filtered.
Not all dorms have this, so if you connect your own hub and things work
fine, you're all set. It's not guaranteed to work forever, though.
(Now that I'm on staff, I guess I should start saying that when I say
stuff like this, I'm saying it unofficially. :) )
