This isn't a bad idea in a multi-boot (well, specifically Linux &
Windows) environment. Some versions of Linux fdisk don't setup
logical partitions in a fashion that Windows understands (insert
handwaving here -- happy to discuss the details of this bug if
anyone is interested). Linux has no problems, but boot Win and
you'll find your data inaccessible... I've had nothing but good
experiences w/Partition Magic. YMMV.

I'm a big fan of of the boot-disk distros, which give you a much
more comprehensive toolkit-on-a-floppy than Red Hat's rescue disk
(my experience w/others, e.g. Debian, Slackware, etc. is limited).
You can get the skinny on boot disks in, of all places, the Linux
Bootdisk HOWTO:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO.html
My personal favorite is Tom's Root Boot, available at:
http://www.toms.net/rb/home.html
Follow his setup instructions, boot the floppy, and you'll have
access to fdisk (along w/a ridiculous qty. of other utils). You can
then change the system ID on your partitions as you see fit...
