Hey all,

I found something relevant in the RH 6.0 errata:

"Problem

     (10-Jun-1999):Notice
     Several programs on Red Hat 6.0 may not stop running when a user logs
     out due to a problem handling signals. The affected programs are xterm,
     rxvt, and screen."

Aha! Upgrading to the newer utempter fixed things.
