bad hard drive

I have encountered the following problem with a hard drive that I just
installed and formatted. I ran fsck and it said that everything was
fine. Yet when I tried to copy some information onto this drive I got
the following errors:

hdb: write_intr: status= 0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
hdb: write_intr: error=0x04 {DriveStatus Error}

and this repeats itself a number of times until I get this error:

hdb: irq time out: status=0xd0 {Busy}
ide0: reset : success

Im sure this does not bode well for this hard drive. Im pretty much
resigned to the fact that Im going to have to return it and have them
send out another one. But, in the off chance that there is something I
can do that might repair this drive I am interested in hearing any
thoughts on the mattter. Also, Im curious, what does all this mean? Is
it due to damage during transport or something else?

Fortunatly I was able to umount the mount points assigned to the
partitions on this drive so Im ok for now.

Thanks for any advice.
