I don't know for certain, as I have never used Solaris, but my guess is
they're done in a package manager not unlike RPM and something the DEC OSF
has...

you might be able to find documentation through 'man -k package' or 'man
-k "package management"'...maybe you have a help utility in your Xterm
where you can search for "package" or "package management" also...

but the extension doesn't look like any archive format I've ever seen...
