Silly ppp question, the conclusion

        I changed my modem's dial string to ATW2D and it now reports the
connection speed the modem achieves with the remote modem in
/var/log/messages (or wherever else I decide to send it), whereas before
it reported the connection speed between my modem and my computer via the
serial port.
