The name and trademarks of Yale University are recognized widely as representing excellence and quality. This reputation is the result of the activities of generations of Yale men and women over the 300-year history of the University. The Yale University Licensing Program is responsible for safeguarding this reputation by ensuring that the Yale name and marks are used in authorized and appropriate ways. The Miscellaneous Regulations of the Yale Corporation Section 2 outlines the responsibility for protection of the Yale name.

Prior written permission is needed from the Yale University Licensing Program for use of the Yale name or trademarks for anything other than official University business. The requirements described here and elsewhere apply to any individuals, businesses, and organizations that are not affiliated with Yale, as well as to alumni, faculty, staff, and students, individually and as part of groups and organizations.

Commercial Use

Yale University does not endorse products or services. Therefore, permission will not be granted for use of the name or trademarks of the University in a manner that may be misunderstood as an endorsement.

Stationery and Printed Materials

Approval of the Yale University Licensing Program is not required to use the Yale name on stationery, business cards, publications, and other materials used in the ordinary course of conducting the business of the University. This applies to printed material and Web sites for which an office or department of the University maintains sole editorial control.

Stationery and business cards may be ordered by Yale’s academic and administrative departments and programs through Yale Reprographic and Imaging Services (RIS).

The Office of the University Printer (203 432-9217) is available to provide general consultation as well as specific guidance and coordination regarding graphic design and editorial resources for Yale University’s print and Web publications.
