2002-03
On February 21, SAME and OutLaws co-sponsored a panel at the Tenth Annual Rebellious Lawyering Conference. The panel, Defending University Non-Discrimination Policies: Litigation Challenging the Solomon Amendment, focused on the Solomon Amendment litigation around the country. The panel featured Professor Robert Burt, lead plaintiff in the Yale faculty suit challenging the Solomon amendment, Professor Stephen Burbank, University of Pennsylvania School of Law, lead plaintiff in the lawsuit brought by U.Penn faculty and students challenging the Solomon Amendment, and Shara Frase, attorney at Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe, the law firm representing FAIR and SALT in litigation challenging the Solomon Amendment.
OutLaws hosted Lavi Soloway, founder of the Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force, for a discussion on LGBT individuals seeking asylum in the United States and co-sponsored the panel OutLegislating at the 2003 Rebellious Lawyering conference at Yale.
Panelists included Connecticut State Representative Evelyn Mantilla, Texas State Representative Glen Maxey, and Minnesota State Senator Alan Spear, the first openly gay legislator in the country, who was elected in 1972.
Several members of OutLaws worked with Professors Harold Koh and Kenji Yoshino to submit an amici curiae brief to the United States Supreme Court in the case of Lawrence v. Texas, challenging Texas’s same-sex sodomy law. The brief argues the Court should consider the decisions of foreign and international courts in deciding whether the Texas statute is constitutional.
Lavender Law
Every year OutLaws sends a group of students to Lavender Law, the annual conference of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association. The conference includes a career fair, social events, and panels on a diverse range of issues affecting LGBT communities.
