AESTHETIC RESPONSE AND MORAL JUDGMENT
Spring, 1999
Professors Bromwich and Kronman
Meets Wednesdays at 2: 10 p.m. in Room 129
The first meeting of the course will be on Wednesday, January 27th at 2: 10 p.m. in Room 129 at the Law School. At our first session, we will say a bit about the structure and aims of the seminar--the sorts of questions we hope to explore and our reasons for being interested in them. Following that, we will begin discussion of our first text, Plato's Republic. The discussion will focus on Book X of the Republic, and Socrates' famous account of the ancient quarrel between philosophy and poetry. Though we will be concentrating on the arguments of Book X, these must be weighed in the light of the dialogue as a whole. Those of you who have not recently reread the Republic may therefore wish to do so in preparation for our first class.
A syllabus for the course will be distributed at our first meeting on the 27th. Books may be purchased at Barnes and Noble.
