Yale Responds to Hurricane Katrina
Look for information on actions that have and/or will be taken by Yale faculty, students and staff to help the relief efforts.
What is Yale doing?
- Yale College will admit about 25 students whose schools have closed. Details on procedures are forthcoming. The Graduate School, Law School, Yale School of Drama and School of Management will also accommodate students. The Yale School of Medicine is accepting Tulane students for placement in clinical rotations.
- Yale will support the New Haven Katrina Relief effort to bring 100 dislocated Gulf families to area to rebuild their lives. Plans are currently being developed. Yale School of Medicine faculty members will provide medical care for the dislocated families. Other schools and departments are putting together plans to assist these families.
- Yale will match up to $1,000 of any charitable donation made by employee or student to an agency providing relief to victims of the hurricane. The matching fund is supported by contributions from the Officers, Deans and Fellows of the University.

- The Yale School of Management (SOM) is offering displaced Tulane University MBA students the opportunity to take classes at SOM for the fall semester under the “Special Student” status. They can admit up to 15 students from the Class of 2006 and 15 students from the Class of 2007. More info...
- Yale will develop long term relief plans that tap the expertise of Yale faculty, students and staff to assist in the recovery of the hurricane stricken areas and its victims.
- At Yale School of Medicine, some faculty are arranging to go to New Orleans and Mississippi.
- There will be a major effort by Yale School of Medicine faculty members to provide medical care and attention to the 100 families relocated to New Haven.
- Yale School of Medicine is accepting Tulane medical students who need placement in clinical rotations. This is being coordinated through the Association of American Medical Colleges. They will know how many tomorrow after Tulane University officials meet.
- Some Yale School of Medicine faculty and staff have written offering to house displaced students.
- Medical students have organized several fund raising efforts including collection boxes for donations, a dinner/concert to raise money and silicone bracelet sales. Meanwhile the Department of Internal Medicine is collecting donations.
- Epidemiology and Public Health has accepted one DrPH (Doctor or Public Health) student from Tulane and is in the process of accepting an MPH student, also from Tulane. They are getting many requests from Tulane Public Health faculty to relocate labs here, but will process these requests per provost office task force.
- The hospital participates as part of a state disaster program.
