Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How old does my child have to be to participate in Adopted Friends?
A: Most of our workshops are geared towards kids from pre-K to elementary school, but in the past, we have even had infants attend our picnic. Please don't let age hinder you from attending Adopted Friends! We anticipate children of all ages to come participate in our workshops.

Q: Does my child have to share a big sib?
A: In some cases, we may have to pair two little sibs up with one Yale volunteer. We try our best to keep the same pairings from year to year, as well as children of the same age together, but it is always a challenge given that the number of student volunteers is subject to change from semester to semester. We are looking to recruit involvement from the broader Yale community, so we hope to accommodate the one-to-one little sib-big sib ratio to the best of our abilities.

Q: What kinds of activities are included in the children's program?
A: In the past, we have had workshops on Korean calligraphy, Tae Kwon Do, traditional Korean drumming, origami, and other traditional Korean games. We have also found that the children like to spend a significant amount of their time playing outdoor games, weather permitting.

Q: Do we have to separate from the children?
A: The parents usually opt to participate in the adult program, which, in past years, has included panel discussions, film screenings, and lectures. If you feel more comfortable being near your children or if you would like to participate in some of the children's activities, we can definitely arrange for that.

Q: Is the picnic open to the general public?
A: Yes! We are always looking to expand our reach and welcome new families. In the past, we have had families come from as far as Massachusetts and New York!

Q: Does the $15 fee apply to every participating little sib or the whole family?
A: The $15 fee applies to the whole family, although we do appreciate any additional donations to help fund our event!

Q: What if my child and I cannot arrive until after registration time?
A: If you are not able to arrive on Yale Campus by 1 pm, please contact me at margaret.ahn@yale.edu or note this on your registration. We will notify your big sib accordingly so you can still check in and participate in our picnic upon your arrival. However, we do advise that you arrive no later than 1pm, as the first hour of acquaintance and play time is not to be missed!
