Remember, November 30 is grading for rank. Please do not forget the grading fee. We will have a short class, grading and then out to dinner for the official end of the semester (though we will continuefor another couple of weeks, unofficially).
If everyone can make it, it would be much appreciated. I would love to get a class pic with everyone in it.

Hi all,
Please see the attached pdf document for details about the upcoming tournament being held in montville, ct. On 10/10
White belts would do 3 step sparring. Even beginners can do it if you feel comfortable by then. Cost is very reasonable ($15 for white belts).
Tournaments are a great place to practice and see quality techniques. I will be judging. Even if you don't want to compete, table workers, timers, scorekeepers, are always needed and lunch is provided for helpers.

Extended brown/black belt classes

Hi all,
This has been a great beginning to the semester. Quite a few new students have registered for the class, which is exciting, but challenging at the same time. In an effort to give equal measures of time to high ranking students, I plan on extending classes on Wednesdays from 8:00-8:30 for brown and black belts only for that last half hour. We will concentrate on advanced kumite drills and advanced kata.
For the time being, I have the self defense class on Mondays from 8-9, but when that class is completed in 5 more weeks, I intend to extend Monday classes until 8:30 for brown and black belts, as well.

Karate starts Monday September 7

Training begins on Labor Day, September 7th.
We will be meeting on Monday/Wednesday 7-8 pm in room 5H on the 5th floor of Payne-Whitney Gym. Following the Mondays class, Dawn and I will be teaching a 6 week self defense class from 8-9 in room J. It is open to everyone.

There are some changes to the karate club that I'm pleased to announce. For the first time, the karate club class will also be a physical education class.  What does that mean? For starters, we have a room already reserved! Secondly, that room will be the basketball court (room 5H) with a nice wood floor.

Additionally, the class/club will be advertised on Yale's phys Ed class website and brochures which will hopefully result in more students, especially beginners. Lastly, and most importantly, we can now permit those outside the Yale community to participate. There are several people that I know of who can Immediately benefit from this change. It can only result in a stronger club.

I'm very excited for this opportunity. So how does the club interact with the class? We will still have a club president (John Wen), and Yale may potentially pay for any tournament participation, equipment, etc).

Most importantly, you will not pay "club dues" anymore. The only downside to the change is the minor increase in cost. The club has been charging $60 per semester for dues since its inception 20 years ago. That cost per semester increases to $95 for gym members, which is still an incredible bargain for 3 months worth of training. For those who are not gym members, the cost is $155 for the 12 weeks. PLEASE contact me with any concerns regarding family participation or the cost of participation.

That being said, I hope to see you all on September 7th!!

Karate starts Monday June 1

Hi all,
Karate classes start on Monday 6/1 @ 5:30 pm on the 6th floor of the gym. If you do not have a gym pass, tell the person at the front desk you are going to the karate and will get a pass at class.

The cost for an 8 week session is $96 for gym members and $120 for non members. I can pro-rate the cost and charge 1/2 for those who will only be here for 4 weeks.

****IMPORTANT**** we may have some beginners and I would like to have a good showing at class for at least the first week, so please try your best to be there. ALSO, it is important to have your payment ASAP, preferably during the first week. Checks should be made out to : YALE UNIVERSITY. Please do not forget.

Karate Wednesday Schedule Change

Hi all.
It seems our Wednesday time slot is in jeopardy for the remainder of the semester. It looks like intramural dodgeball has trumped us. Unless you hear otherwise, our Wednesday class will have to meet from 8-9 pm. I apologize, but unless some magic happens, we are at the mercy of the gym.
Hopefully you can all make it.

Spring Karate tournament

Hi all,
The karate tournament will be held next Saturday, April 25th. As an added incentive, if you compete in the competition, your grading fee of $20 will be waved. Additionally, if you win a match in kata or kumite (sparring), you will pass that portion of your rank exam!!

White belts will compete doing heian shodan and 3-step sparring. Green belts will compete with heian 3 and 4 and be one step sparring. Brown/black belts will compete with free sparring and heian 1-thru tekki shodan. You can do both events or just one (kata and/or kumite). The club pays the entry fee.

It is a great method of training and meeting some great new people from other area clubs. Even if you just want to come to watch or help.

2015 Guest Instructor

Well, I hope everyone is ready for an exciting semester. I hope to have a guest instructor come midway through the semester. I have invited sensei Margaret Thomas to teach a class.

Sensei Thomas holds a 6th degree black belt with the Japan Karate Association and is one of the highest-ranking women in the country. Sensei is also an accomplished competitor in sport karate. She has been a member of the USA Karate Team numerous times and has received regional, national, and international kata and kumite (sparring) awards spanning more than a decade. Remember that winter camp is right around the corner and is a great opportunity to have instruction by some of the worlds leading instructors at a very affordable price. If you need me to forward the information again, please let me know. Several students have already expressed interest, so car-pooling is probably very possible.

Self Defense Class Mondays 8-9pm

Also, following the Monday class, Dawn and I will be holding a 6 week self defense class that will include self defense techniques and gun disarming. It's a very fun class, the cost is minimal (I think around $20 for all 6 classes), and it has received a very warm reception in the past. This class is different from the one that was held in september.
All are welcome to join us following the Monday class from 8-9 on the 5th floor of Payne Whitney Gym . Even if you cannot make Monday karate classes, feel free to come to the self defense class.
