Call for Papers:

Special Issue on Waste Valorization and Loop-Closing

Deadline: September 15, 2008

The Journal of Industrial Ecology invites you to submit articles for a special issue on Waste Valorization and Loop-Closing by September 15, 2008. Prof. Ange Nzihou, of the Ecole des Mines d'Albi-Carmaux (Albi, France), Prof. Matthew Leach, of the Center for Environmental Strategy at the University of Surrey (Surrey, UK), and Prof. Gerasimos Lyberatos of the University of Patras (Greece) will serve as co-editors of the special issue.

The Journal of Industrial Ecology is a peer-reviewed international journal owned by Yale University, published by Wiley-Blackwell and headquartered at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Waste valorization is the treatment of waste for beneficial use as raw material or as an energy carrier, with the emphasis on minimizing emissions. It is part of the larger endeavor of loop-closing, a key theme in industrial ecology. Industrial ecology is an emerging field that examines the flow of materials and energy at various scales as part of the study and pursuit of sustainable production and consumption.

Papers from the 2nd International Conference on Engineering for Waste Valorisation (Patras, Greece, Jun 3-5, 2008) will be solicited along with submissions from the International Society for Industrial Ecology. The special issue will be published as a supplemental issue in 2009.

Suggested Topics for the Special Issue

The goal of this special issue is to disseminate research on the state of the art in waste valorization, specially as it related to the contribution of valorization to environmental quality and sustainability goals. Appropriate topics include:

Papers should make use of systems-oriented tools and analyses on topics related to waste valorization and should, to the extent possible, link analyses to the literature in industrial ecology. Papers that focus exclusively or primarily on descriptions of engineering processes are not appropriate for this special issue.

Industrial Ecology

Industrial ecology is an emerging field that examines local, regional, and global uses and flows of materials and energy in products, processes, industrial sectors and economies. It focuses on the potential role of industry in reducing environmental burdens throughout the product life cycle and encompasses:

How to Submit
Manuscripts should be original, previously unpublished, in English, and between 3,500 and 7,000 words in length. Submission implies that the manuscript has not been submitted for publication elsewhere and that it will not be submitted elsewhere while the review process is underwayAll submissions will be reviewed according to the Journal's standard single-blind peer review process. Papers should be submitted electronically via Manuscript Central at <http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jie>. Details about the preparation of the manuscript can be obtained from the Journal's web page <http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/jie> or from the editor.
