Fellowships

 

NEW    The Japan Program of the Council on East Asian Studies has established Summer Japan Travel Fellowships to nurture interest in Japan and Japanese studies among undergraduates. These awards will allow students with a demonstrated interest in Japan to spend a summer there either working on an independent project, participating in an internship, or pursuing research for subsequent coursework or for the senior essay. US citizenship is not required.
Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who have taken some coursework related to Japan and who wish to build upon that exposure and interest are eligible to apply. The funds may not be used for language study or formal coursework. Fellows are expected to spend a minimum of eight weeks in Japan. Approximately three awards of $6,000 each will be made annually.

The Fox International Fellowship Program supports research exchanges between Yale and The University of Tokyo Graduate School for graduating seniors, graduate and professional school students conducting independent research on topics related to economics, political science, international relations, law, business and finance, or contemporary history. All fellowships provide expenses for airfare and housing, a stipend for living expenses, as well as some in-country travel related to research. Priority is for a full academic year, although single term awards are possible.

Parker Huang Undergraduate Travel Fellowships are awarded annually for advanced language study or the study of socio-cultural topics in the language of a non-English speaking country. First preference is given to proposals for projects in China; thereafter, elsewhere in Asia, Africa or other regions (such as Central Asia, the Caucasus, Eastern Europe, Russia, Latin America or the Middle East). The awards are intended to support either advanced language study (begun at Yale or elsewhere) or study/work focusing on socio-cultural issues in the host country. Proposals may include either university study, independent projects, or an unpaid or low-paying work experience. Eligible are students in Yale College who are U.S. citizens and who will have at least Junior standing by the beginning date of the award. Graduating Seniors are eligible to apply. The Fellowship supports 9-12 months of residency abroad.

The Charles Kao Fund supports grants to students of Yale College (including graduating seniors), graduate students in M.A. and Ph.D. programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and graduate students in the professional schools for summer research in East and Southeast Asia. In general, applications from international students proposing research projects in their country or origin are ineligible. Research should focus on the impact of technology transfer processes between Asia and the West and/or among East and Southeast Asia, and the social, cultural, and political transformations in these regions. Grant requests of up to $5,000 to support field research, summer internships or other creative projects in Asia will be entertained. Priority will be given to students with demonstrated long-term academic commitment to and professional preparation for work in East or Southeast Asia, who have already acquired the necessary level of language proficiency to complete their proposed research work, or who need substantial first-hand exposure to Asia to complete a course of academic study.

The Richard U. Light Fellowship Program provides fellowships for the study of Chinese, Korean or Japanese languages at selected sites in East Asia for all registered Yale students including undergraduates, graduating seniors, graduate and professional students. Fellowships provide full funding for travel, tuition, room and board, and health insurance for a single term, a full year, a summer program, or a combination of those periods. Preference is given for the academic year or terms of study longer than summer. Annual spring/fall competitions, generally January and October.

Southeast Asia Studies offers a limited number of research-related grants to students with a demonstrated commitment to the field of Southeast Asia studies. Grants support language training, masters thesis summer research, pre-dissertation field research, and small supplements that may be required to bring a research project to fruition. Any graduate or undergraduate student currently enrolled at Yale may apply. Awards up to $3,000. For additional information see www.yale.edu/seas/studentgrants.htm.

Internships

The Mitsubishi/Leitner International Internship provide support for a summer internship in Tokyo for a financial services unit of the Mitsubishi Companies. Interns will research private equity markets in Japan and be responsible for preparing an overview report which addresses categories of transactions, sources of investment projects, sources of funds, returns on investment, comparisons with U.S. markets, future prospects, etc. Grants are intended to support transportation and living expenses while working in an uncompensated position at the firm for a minimum of eight weeks.
