Password-protecting Web sites on the central campus Web server

How to restrict access to web pages on www.yale.edu

Access to pages located on www.yale.edu can be restricted in several ways:

  • Access can be limited to computers that are located on campus or using Yale's dial-up service (including VPN).
    [instructions]
  • Access can be limited to users with a Yale netid and and password (Central Authentication Service)
    [instructions]
  • Access can be limited to users using ids and passwords that you create.
    [instructions]

Certain combinations of these methods are possible. For instance, off-campus users can be required to authenticate using a password, but on-campus users can be allowed access without a password. The possible combinations are:

  • Allow on-campus access for all users, but require Yale netid and password for off-campus users.
    [instructions]
  • Allow on-campus access for all users, but require off-campus users to enter an id and password that you have created.
    [instructions]

Note: It is not possible to combine Yale netid and password access with custom passwords that you create. For instance, if you wish to password protect a web site that is accessed both by current Yale affiliates with valid Yale NetIDs and by alumni without NetIDs, you will have to create custom ids and passwords for all users.

Note: .htaccess files control access to the directory in which they reside and any of its subdirectories.WS.
