Central Campus Web Publishing - Getting Started

Yale University encourages departments and other organizational units to publish on the World Wide Web. Faculty descriptions, academic program information, news bulletins, calendars, service & price lists and general information about your department or organization can be made available through Web pages.

www.yale.edu, the ITS Institutional Web server hosts Web space for Yale-affiliated organizations and interest groups. One of the servers supported by the Web Team, Elsinore account holders are given 20 MB of space at no charge to qualifying organizations. Additional space is available for a fee. Applicants must be members of the Yale Community, (Yale faculty, staff or students) and have a valid Yale NetID.

The general process

  1. Preliminary Steps - What to think about before you begin developing a website.
  2. Request an account - Upon request, all authorized organizations within the University will be provided with an account and space on the server for Web publishing.
  3. Developing your web site
    • Software Recommendations - Web Services recommends the following tools when developing web sites at Yale University.
    • Best Practices - Learn how to plan the development and strategy for your web site.
    • Web Search - basic information on how to add search to your Web pages, as well as advice on best practices for optimizing your pages for search engine visibility.
    • Password Protection - It is possible to password-protect Web pages or restrict them to on-campus access.
    • Connecting to the Server - basic information on how to connect to www.yale.edu to move your site where others can view the pages.
