Web search services: Information & support for Web search at Yale

Yale University has licensed the Google Search Appliance as a university-wide solution for Web search at Yale. The appliance is hosted by the ITS Data Center and managed by ITS Web Services. The following pages provide basic information on how to use the Google Search Appliance in your searches, how to add search to your Web pages, as well as advice on best practices for optimizing your pages for search engine visibility. Why Yale acquired the new search engineEarly in 2006 Yale’s Office of the Secretary and the Information Technology Services department agreed that improved Web search was a significant university-wide priority. ITS Web services was then charged with acquiring improved search technology. With the help of an advisory committee ITS Web Services decided to acquire a single GB-1001 Google Search Appliance, licensed for two years to cover up to one million Web documents. Yale University currently has approximately 650,000 documents online in its approximately 100 major Web servers, although about 125,000 documents are on servers or in directories that have requested “no search.” Approximately 525,000 documents visible to the public World Wide Web are currently included in the master search engine index on Yale’s Google Search Appliance. What is a “search appliance?”The Google Search Appliance is a combination of hardware and Google's proprietary search software. The appliance is actually a highly-customized Linux machine with a built-in RAID array of drives for storage. Our Yale Google Search Appliance uses the same search techniques as the “public” Google site (www.google.com), but our Yale Google Search Appliance does not share information with the public Google site, and we use the Google Search Appliance only to index Yale University sites.
