Medical Campus: 785-4700

  1. Telephone number and station I.D. you are reporting.
  2. Is this a Yale provided phone? If so, then what type: 16-button service set, standard single line or 2-line set?
  3. What is the building, room number and floor number containing the problem phone?
  4. What is the nature of the problem?
  5. Be prepared to provide several dates and time when you, or a roommate, can be in the room when the repairman arrives. For security reasons, we cannot repair phones unless the student is present in the room.

Troubleshooting/Common Solutions:

  • Check to make sure the ringer is on maximum volume.
  • Unplug the phone from the wall jack and plug it back in.
  • Are all of the wire connections secure?
  • Is there a shrill noise when you pick up the handset?
    • Depress all of the buttons on the keypad - one may be stuck

If you have no dial tone:

  • Have you ordered telephone service and waited 3-5 working days since your order?
  • Be sure you have plugged your telephone into all the jacks in the room to see which one is activated.
  • Try your phone in a room that has telephone service to see if your telephone is working or try another telephone in your jack.
  • Are the wires running from the handset to the telephone and from the telephone to the jack plugged in securely?
  • Do you have an answering machine? If so, try plugging the phone in without the answering machine to determine if the answering machine is the problem.

If you cannot receive calls:

  • Is the handset cradled properly?
  • Are all the plugs secure?
  • Check the ringer switch on the telephone. It may be turned off.
  • Call the telephone from another room. Can you hear it ring through the receiver?
  • Campus Users: If you have Voice Mail, try lifting the receiver and pressing #2 and then have someone call you. This cancels any call forwarding.
  • Do callers have the correct number? Call Yale Directory Assistance at 2-4771 and ask for the number assigned to your line.

If call waiting does not work:

Campus Users: If callers within the University are using 5-digit dialing, call waiting will not work. Tell them to dial 9 + 436 and your number.

If you have Voice Mail and are using it to take calls while you are talking on the telephone, call waiting will not work. In this case, deactivate the call forward busy feature by lifting the receiver and pressing #4. Call 436-8080 for further Voice Mail information.
