File sharing on Omega
Omega is the server designated for Medical Center Student use. All YSM, PA, EPH and YSN students are given file space on the Omega Server (the same server used for email) to store documents. Students can access this file space from any computer connected to the network.

- In the Server Address box type smb://omega.med.yale.edu/
- Use your NetID and password to connect
Note: VPN is required for off campus computers. Click here for VPN details.
Access From the PCs in the CRL and in the Information Room
In the Medical Library log into one of the Windows computers; the my documents folder is automatically mapped to the share on Omega. You can right click on the My Documents folder and select properties to see that you are in fact logged into your directory on Omega.
From the PCs in the Information Room
You are normally logged in with a guest account, the guest user name is G_MedLib_Cluster. The guest account does not give you access to your network space. To logon with your NetID:
- Select Logoff Guest from the Start Menu.
- Hold the Shift key down while clicking Yes to confirm Logout.
- At the next login box you will be able to enter your Netid and password and will be logged in to the Yale Domain and your shared file is mapped to the My Documents.
- You can confirm this by right clicking on My Documents and selecting properties.
- BE SURE TO LOG OFF WHEN YOU LEAVE THE COMPUTER. If not, your files will be accessible to the next user.
Important notes
Avoid modifying, moving or removing these files when accessing files in your omega filespace:
- any file found in the directory "/Mail/" (these are all your email folders)
- any file beginning with a period - some examples below (there may be others)
- .procmailrc ( used for spam filtering)
- .forward (used for forwarding email and necessary for the vacation program to work)
- .vacation.dir, .vacation.msg, .vacation.pag (other necessary vacation program files)
- .pinerc (pine config file)
- .addressbook (pine addressbook)
- .login, .bashrc, .profile (environment variables)
- Mailbox (this is actually your Inbox and is not located in the /Mail subdirectory with other email folders/files)
There may be any number of other email folders/files located by misadventure outside the /Mail/ subdirectory - user beware - you should recognize your own mail foldernames. Remove these at your own risk.
