Student purchasing options

We have worked with Apple, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to configure computer packages for you.

STC specifically recommend that you purchase one of the recommended systems available from Dell, including their Complete Care (accidental damage coverage) warranty. With many Dell-certified Student Techs (STs), we are often able to repair under-warranty Dell computers within 2 business days. This makes the repair process hassle-free, as you do not have to coordinate with Dell's general warranty support.

We also have a similar warranty repair program with Apple, and have certified technicians who will either repair under-warranty Apple computers or facilitate their repair through Apple. However, Apple currently does not offer a manufacturer's accidental damage warranty.

We recommend that you purchase business-class computers, like Dell Latitudes, HP Business Notebooks, and Lenovo ThinkPads, rather than home-user computers. Business-class computers are generally built with more reliable components and are better designed for less downtime. Home-user computers, like Dell Inspirons, HP Pavilions, and Lenovo 3000 series, are cheaper, but they are not made with the business-quality components, so they are more prone to overheating and premature failure in a high-use environment.

Any new Apple, Dell Latitude, HP Business Notebook, or Lenovo ThinkPad system with a four-year on-site warranty, 1 GB of RAM, and Ethernet capability meets Student Technology Collaborative recommendations. In addition, the recommended computer packages from the vendors below include the following upgrades. If you purchase your computer separately, we strongly recommend that you also purchase these upgrades:

  • CompuTrace LoJack
  • On-site Warranty Support
  • Accident Protection (i.e. Dell's CompleteCare, HP's Accidental Damage Protection Service, or Lenovo's Thinkpad Protection)

When purchasing software, keep in mind that Yale offers some software to students for free via downloads at the Yale Software page. It is recommended to all students to visit this page to download Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. Advice for purchasing software is also available at that page.
