How to Set an Administrator Password in Windows XP
Note: it is neither necessary nor adviseable to set up an Administrator account in Windows Vista. The Adminstrator account is deactivated by default.
It is extremely important that users on the Yale network set strong Administrator passwords in Windows XP. Many viruses and worms attack computers through weak Administrator password. Having a weak Administrator password is similar to leaving the door to your house unlocked.
Important: It is very important to remember this password.
- Click Start, then select Run. Type control userpasswords2. Click on OK.
- Select the Administrator account and then click on Reset Password....
- Enter a new Administrator password and confirm it. Click on OK.
- Note: Choose a strong password for the Administrator account that cannot be guessed or hacked. Strong passwords are more than five characters and include a creative combination of the following:
- uppercase and lowercase letters (passwords are "case-sensitive")
- numbers
- symbols and punctuation signs
- Click OK to save your settings.
Depending on who uses your computer, you may already have multiple accounts at this level. Make sure they are secure!
