How to Install Symantec Antivirus
If you need further assistance, please request help from a Student Tech.
The latest versions of Symantec Antivirus (SAV) available to Yale studentsare 10.1.6.6000 (Windows XP) and 10.2 (Windows Vista). If you are running an older version of SAV, please follow all of these instructions to install the latest version.
Windows XP
Uninstalling Old Versions of SAV or other Antivirus programs
If you are using McAfee or Norton or any other antivirus software, please remove it by following the steps below.
If you are using an older version of SAV, please uninstall it before proceeding. To verify what version of SAV installed on your computer, open the main program window by clicking on the SAV Icon in the bottom right taskbar. Below is the program window of the latest version of SAV. Please verify that you are running 10.1.6.6000.
- To uninstall any version of SAV as well as any antivirus program you have, use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, accessible through the Start menu.
- Reboot if prompted.

Select Remove for Symantec Antivirus or any other antivirus software you have.
Installing Symantec Antivirus
- Go to the Yale Software Library at http://www.yale.edu/its/software
- Click on Download Software and login with your NetID and password. Select Windows for your operating system, and then select Symantec Antivirus 10.1.6.6000, and download it to your desktop.
- Run the program you just downloaded, sav_10166000.exe. Keep all default options:
- Make sure you run Live Update to get the latest virus protection. Without these updated virus definitions, your computer will not be protected.
- Click Next, then Finishafter Live Update has downloaded its latest updates. Reboot, if prompted.
- In Symantec Antivirus , go to the File menu, and select Schedule Updates....
- Click the Schedule... button, and select Daily for the frequency. Choose a time of day when your computer will usually be turned on; we recommend 8PM.
- Click OK for both windows to save your changes.


Note: If you have not yet registered your computer for the Yale network or do not have internet access while you are installing Symantec Antivirus, you will not be able to run Live Update. Live Update needs to access a website outside of the Yale network and needs an active internet connection to do so. Just continue to Step 4.

Windows Vista

Installing Symantec Antivirus
- Go to the Yale Software Library at http://www.yale.edu/its/software
