Apple OS 10.5 (Leopard)

On October 26, 2007, Apple released OS 10.5, Leopard, the next upgrade to the OS X operating system. Many software manufacturers have been developing Leopard compatible versions of their applications. Before you upgrade to Leopard you must be able to answer yes to the following three questions:

  1. Are all of the applications that you use compatible with Leopard?
  2. Does your computer meet the minimum hardware requirements for Leopard?
  3. Does the software vendor provide support if there is a problem with Leopard?

1. Application compatibility

During testing, ITS has identified the following applications that have known issues:

  • Classic (OS 9) is no longer installed with Leopard, and will not function.  If Classic is a requirement, do not upgrade to Leopard.
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 - Adobe Acrobat Pro currently is not currently supported for 10.5. The full list for all Adobe products can be seen at http://www.adobe.com/support/products/pdfs/leopardsupport.pdf
  • Kerberos - Kerberos 4 is no longer supported.
  • Symantec AntiVirus (SAV 10) is not compatible with Leopard at this time.

The following applications in use at Yale will work on Leopard:

  • Cisco VPN - The Cisco VPN software may require a reinstallation. Please download a new version from the Yale software library and reinstall.
  • Safari 3.0- In preliminary testing, Safari 3.0 has shown to be promising with Yale specific web applications. When more information is available, a complete matrix will be published.
  • Symantec AntiVirus (SAV 11) - Compatible with Leopard (10.5). Download from the ITS software library.

2. Hardware requirements

Leopard requires the following hardware:

  • PowerPC G5, PowerPC G4, Intel
  • 512MB of memory
  • DVD drive for installation
  • 9GB available disk space
  • Some features may require .Mac service
  • Some features may require a compatible Internet Service Provider

If your hardware does not meet these requirements, Leopard is not supported by the manufacturer.

3. Support for Leopard

ITS is currently in the process of training staff to support Leopard. Leopard contains many new features that were not available in previous version of OS X.
