Keeping your Yale University NetID secure and private

Your Yale NetID is a critical resource in your work and scholarship at Yale University. To protect the privacy and security of your online identity, and the integrity of the University’s systems, Yale’s policy is that you should never use your NetID or NetID password for any purpose outside of Yale.

For example, never use your Yale NetID and NetID password combination as your account identification on a commercial site, or as credentials for your personal banking. This protects both the security of Yale systems and your own privacy.

Once identity thieves have your name and password they will try that combination on all your accounts, so it is always better to have multiple name-password combinations to separate the various aspects of your online life, and to ensure that a single compromised system doesn't leave your whole online identity exposed.

Never share your NetID password under any circumstances

Your NetID is the equivalent of your online signature to verify your personal identity, and should never be shared with anyone else, not even a trusted co-worker or your supervisor.

YALE UNIVERSITY WILL NEVER ASK YOU TO EMAIL YOUR PASSWORD!

Identity thieves send out fraudulent but real-looking “phishing” messages to try and trick you into disclosing your login credentials.

If an email ever asks you to respond with your password, it is inherently a fraudulent message. No legitimate organization will ever ask you to supply a password in an email response.

To prevent identity theft or unauthorized use of University resources, Yale will ask you to change your NetID password annually. If you believe that your NetID password has been compromised, please contact the Information Security Office. You can also voluntarily change your NetID password at any time.

See the ITS NetID page for complete information and instructions
