Medical student connections to the Yale network
This page contains information for students regarding NetIDS and connecting to the Yale network.
Technology questions not answered on this site may be directed to the ITS Help Desk at 785-3200, 432-9000 or by emailing helpdesk@yale.edu.
Yale NetIDs and passwords
Each current member of the Yale community has been assigned a unique network identification (NetID). Your Yale NetID and password act as your passport to the campus network and many University accounts including email. All incoming students will receive a letter from Student Financial and Administrative Services with their NetID and an associated PIN number for activating your NetID. Follow the instructions in that letter to activate your NetID and create your initial password.
- Go to Activate Your Net ID With A PIN for instructions and activation of your NetID

Harkness student access
All of the rooms in Harkness Dormitory are wired for data communications. Residents can connect their own personal computers to the campus network at no charge. To do so residents should:
(1) have an ethernet cable (should be in dorm room, if not, check with housing office);
(2) register your computer and enable use of your connection for the entire year by completing an online Room Connection Sign Up form and:
(3) install the necessary software on a CD-ROM from the the Medical Library Circulation Desk. Installation instructions are on the CD.
Once registered, students can use the wired Ethernet jacks available in the Medical and the EPH Libraries. Live connections are marked with a label next to the connection. The Medical Library has two carrels in the periodical room with ethernet jacks and cables. Several jacks with cables are located on the Index bars in the center of the Information Room. EPH Library has 5 carrels (CLP 2,3,4,5,18) with ethernet jacks.
Remote access
PPP accounts are provided by the Medical School free of charge to all Medical, PA, and EPH students. The BBS program will provide graduate students in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program with PPP accounts. (NOTE: Nursing and graduate students not in BBS will NOT be provided with PPP accounts, they may choose to purchase these PPP services from Yale ITS.)
To set up your PPP account, you will need to install the software on your machine from a CD-ROM available at several locations:
- Computing and Media Center (CMC) in SHM I-E90
- Incoming Medical Students will receive the software during orientation at the Medical Library.
- All other medical center students can check out software from the Circulation Desk at the Medical Library.
- EPH Students can also check out the software at the EPH Library.
- Installation instructions are on the CD or by operating system: Windows or Macintosh.
Wireless networking
Wireless access points for student laptops are available in the Medical and EPH Libraries. The Medical Library has wireless cards which can be borrowed from the Circulation Desk. Wireless access is also available at other locations in the medical center and on Yale's central campus. The Yale wireless network is available at several locations.
Wireless networks provide a lower level of security than wired networks. To protect sensitive data and communications from access by unauthorized individuals, ITS is requiring a level of security called VPN (virtual private networking), which encrypts all traffic between a wireless computing device and the campus network.
Configure your wireless card according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the card. You may be able to "see" the network and receive a signal but you will not have any access to the Internet or other network services until this information has been registered. There may be a delay of 10 or 15 minutes from when you register the card to when it will be recognized on the network. Depending on your computer's model, operating system and the brand of card, you may also have to set up a profile with the Yale "Network Name." Open the configuration utility for your wireless LAN card and set the Network Name (called "SSID") to "yale wireless."
Anyone with a Yale University or Yale-New Haven Hospital ID may borrow a wireless networking card to use in their personal laptop computer. Your computer must have an available PCMCIA slot and a CD-ROM for loading software may be required. Cards may be borrowed for up to 4 hours at a time.
