Medical student connections to the Yale network

This page contains information for students regarding NetIDS and connecting to the Yale network.

Technology questions not answered on this site may be directed to the ITS Help Desk at 203-432-9000 or by emailing helpdesk@yale.edu.

Yale NetIDs and passwords

Each current member of the Yale community has been assigned a unique network identification (NetID). Your Yale NetID and password act as your passport to the campus network and many University accounts including email. All incoming students will receive a letter from Student Financial and Administrative Services with their NetID and an associated PIN number for activating your NetID. Follow the instructions in that letter to activate your NetID and create your initial password.

Harkness student access

All of the rooms in Harkness Dormitory are wired for data communications. Residents can connect their own personal computers to the campus network at no charge. To do so residents should:

(1) have an ethernet cable (should be in dorm room, if not, check with housing office);
(2) register your computer and enable use of your connection for the entire year by completing the online Yale Network Registration Form and:
(3) install the necessary software on a CD-ROM from the the Medical Library Circulation Desk. Installation instructions are on the CD.

Once registered, students can use the wired Ethernet jacks available in the Medical and the EPH Libraries. Live connections are marked with a label next to the connection. The Medical Library has two carrels in the periodical room with ethernet jacks and cables. Several jacks with cables are located on the Index bars in the center of the Information Room. EPH Library has 5 carrels (CLP 2,3,4,5,18) with ethernet jacks.

Remote access

  • YaleSecure - Always connect to the YaleSecure WiFi network when on the Medical School Wireless Network. Unlike the "yale wireless" network, the VPN is not required when you connect to YaleSecure.

  • AnyConnect VPN Client - This new and improved VPN client from Cisco is available from the ITS Software Library. AnyConnect is the recommended remote access method for most users and most applications. For further information ...

  • PPTP VPN connectivity - This method of connecting will be phased out in late 2010. Unlike the older Cisco IPSEC client, the AnyConnect client is compatible with both Windows Vista and Windows 7 and is the recommended solution for most users. Another option is to convert your existing PPTP connection to L2TP protocol.

Visit the Yale VPN web page for more information.

Wireless networking

To protect sensitive data and communications from access by unauthorized individuals, University policy requires a higher level of security when accessing the Yale wireless network on the medical campus. To access the wireless network at the Medical Campus, you must use YaleSecure or Yale wireless with Virtual Private Network (VPN).  YaleSecure and Yale wireless with VPN encrypt all traffic between a wireless computing device and the campus network.

Wireless networks provide a lower level of security than wired networks.
