How to securely remove all data from a mobile device

In the event your device is lost, stolen, or being repurposed you may follow the steps below to remove all data from the device. If you need to report lost or stolen electronic media or a computing device please complete our lost/stolen form and send it to security@yale.edu.
Do not cancel your service for the phone/PDA until after the device is wiped.

There are two ways to erase your mobile device:

Remotely
Your mobile device can be remotely erased if connected to BES for Blackberry or the YaleConnect webmail for active sync devices.

Manually
Your mobile device can be manually erased.

How to securely remove all data from your Blackberry

If your Blackberry is on BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server)

  1. Call Client Accounts and have the handheld wiped.
  2. After the Wipe has completed call Verizon to deactivate account.

If Blackberry is not on BES

  1. Go to options > Security Options > General Settings press the BlackBerry button and select wipe handheld, you will get a warning, select Continue now type the word BlackBerry and your device will start the wipe procedure.
  2. After the Wipe has completed call Verizon to deactivate account.

How to securely remove all data from your iPhone or other Active sync device on Exchange:

  1. Log into your YaleConnect web account https://connect.yale.edu
  2. Select Options > Mobile Devices

  1. Select Device to wipe then click on Wipe All Data from Device.
  2. After the Wipe has completed call your wireless provider to deactivate account.

How to securely remove all data from your Treo


If your Treo is on the Good server:

  1. Call Client accounts and have the handheld erased.
  2. After the wipe has completed call Verizon to deactivate account.

If your Treo is not on the Good server

You must perform a hard reset/clean wipe of the Treo:

  1. Remove the battery cover from the back of the device.
  2. Press and hold the power (red phone) button.
  3. While holding the red power button remove and replace the battery from the device.
  4. When you see the "Access Powered" screen on the device take you finger off of the power button.  At this point, you'll be prompted to erase the device by pressing up on the directional pad.
